Additional Information

Published in 1893 by Currier and Ives of New York after a painting by Louis Maurer, this electrifying scene captures seven jockeys on powerful thoroughbreds jostling for position moments before the start. The horses strain against their riders with muscles taut and nostrils flared in anticipation.

Thoroughbred racing stood at its peak during the final years of the nineteenth century, with famous tracks from Saratoga Springs to Sheepshead Bay drawing enormous crowds each season. Wealthy owners invested fortunes in bloodlines while working-class fans packed the grandstands, united by their shared passion for speed.

Maurer ranks among the most remarkable figures in American art history, producing works for Currier and Ives across six decades and living to the extraordinary age of one hundred. His ability to render horses in motion with anatomical precision and dramatic energy made him one of the firm's most valued contributors.

This reproduction recalls an era when thundering hooves and flying silks defined the nation's most thrilling spectator sport. Considered among the finest racing prints of the Gilded Age, it brings dynamic energy to any study, tack room, or sporting retreat.
