Additional Information

Created in the early 1930s for the Soviet Union's official travel agency, this Art Deco poster pictures a sun-warmed beach on the Black Sea coast of Crimea. The peninsula's mild climate and open shoreline had long made it a favored summer retreat.

The agency was the country's sole bureau for international travel, founded to earn hard currency by drawing Western visitors east. Posters like this one appeared in booking offices across Europe and America, presenting Crimea's coast as a southern rival to the French Riviera.

Long before the Bolsheviks, Crimea had drawn Russian nobility and writers to its vineyards, palaces, and warm sea air. After the revolution, its grand villas became state sanatoriums and workers' rest homes, and the region was promoted as a health-giving escape for all.

Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of the seaside holiday and offers a window into Soviet tourism's first decade, when the peninsula was sold abroad as a sun-washed getaway. Its bold, graphic style makes a prized addition to a study, lounge, or hallway.
