Additional Information
Created in the 1930s for the Netherlands Indies State Railways, this travel poster crowns Java and Bali the Isles of Romance. It frames the two islands as a far tropical paradise of color and ease, drawing Europeans across the sea toward Southeast Asia.
The colonial State Railways issued it through their publicity office to lure visitors onto the rail lines that crossed Java. By then Bali had become a fashionable retreat, marketed to the West as an island of artists, dancers, and temple ritual.
Java offered the grand ruins of old Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms, green rice terraces, and smoking volcanoes. Smaller Bali lay just beyond, a living stronghold of Hindu faith where music, dance, and ceremony shaped daily life. Steamers and trains tied the long route together.
Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of travel and offers a window into the Dutch East Indies of the 1930s, when distant islands first opened to the wider world. Its warm tones make a prized addition to a study, lounge, or sunroom.
