This unique depiction and detailed birds-eye perspective shows the iconic Los Angeles in a period of great transition. The film industry had blossomed and created a robust local economy as the studio systems produced numerous films for international release. Birdseye perspectives were popular depictions that promoted notable businesses, buildings, and other civic features to serve as promotional material for cities looking to attract new residents. K.M. Leuschner was a prolific producer of maps in this style, and his works are among the most revered from the era. This production also includes the names of several notable movie stars in the index, which is a feature unique to this map.
Although this map was produced while the nation was still mired in the Great Depression, it presents a hopeful vision for a prosperous future. Leuschner was a German-born immigrant who worked as a lithographer for numerous graphic design companies, and his works are noted for their brilliant use of contrast and bright colors. This birds-eye perspective is his most famous publication and is in the archives of the University of California, Berkeley.
Published by the Western Lithographic Company, which was founded in 1899, this maps distinctive aesthetic, and signature style immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates a bond between the past and the present. Western Lithographic was one of two printing companies that focused on maps and birds-eye perspectives on the west coast and was based out of San Francisco until it closed in 1953.
