Additional Information

Created in 1935 by the New Zealand Railways Studio, this scenic travel poster frames Christchurch, gateway to the South Island. The central view shows the Avon River at the Bridge of Remembrance beneath the cathedral spire, with insets picturing sunny lakes, alpine glaciers, and steaming hot springs.

The Railways Publicity Branch issued the poster to promote tourism across the island, positioning Christchurch as the ideal base for exploring nearby natural wonders. During the 1930s, expanding rail networks made the region's remote scenery newly accessible to holidaymakers and overseas visitors.

Founded in 1850 as a planned English settlement, Christchurch earned its nickname, the Garden City, for its leafy parks and quiet boulevards. Beyond the plains rose the Southern Alps, whose snowfields, deep valleys, and thermal pools beckoned a growing wave of interwar travelers.

Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of rail travel and offers a window into the allure of discovering New Zealand by train. With its crisp design and vivid color, it makes a prized addition to a study, lounge, or library.
