First issued that year, the poster proved an immediate sensation, gracing children's walls across America for decades afterward.

Born near Prague, Hess held a metallurgy degree and served in the French Foreign Legion before wandering through countless trades and settling in Grand Rapids, Michigan as a landscape gardener. His singular vision, by turns tender and faintly eerie, made him a quiet original of American popular culture.

This splendid reproduction stands as a testament to one immigrant's boundless creativity through adversity and offers a window into the fanciful worlds that delighted generations of youngsters. A fascinating addition to sitting rooms, dens, classrooms, or reading corners, it remains a sought after gem among collectors of vintage Americana.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0504/5459/3725/files/1sCn-cCxyz9Gx40GD_AdvbPsPwP7L-A8Z_w1000.jpg?v=1792744274
