Additional Information
Created in 1936 by the Swiss artist Vera Hirzel, this travel poster looks out over Lausanne and its harbor at Ouchy. The Gothic spires of the cathedral and the towers of the Château d'Ouchy rise among trees, with Lake Geneva and the snowy Alps beyond.
The poster sold Lausanne as a lakeshore resort, its old university town climbing the hillside above the water. A small funicular railway dropped down to Ouchy, where ferries, hotels, and a shaded promenade followed the curving shore of Lac Léman.
Below the city, paddle steamers crossed the lake toward France and the Savoy coast, their decks bright with passengers. Lausanne had welcomed writers and wanderers since the eighteenth century, valued for its mild climate and its long view across the water.
Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of travel and offers a window into the lakeside resorts of the 1930s, when Lake Geneva drew an unhurried, well-heeled crowd. Its calm palette makes a prized addition to a study, library, or hall.
