Additional Information
Created in 1936 by Swiss artist Fortuné Bovard, this Art Deco poster celebrates golf at Lausanne, the city perched above Lake Geneva. A lone player crosses green fairways, while the blue lake and the snow-tipped Alps stretch along the horizon beyond.
The poster was made to lure visitors to the links on the wooded heights outside Lausanne, founded in 1921 at Le Chalet-à-Gobet. By the 1930s, golf had become a fashionable pastime for the wealthy travelers who wintered and summered on the Swiss Riviera.
Bovard, born in Fribourg, trained in Geneva, Basel, Munich, and Paris before turning to commercial design. His crisp, modern style suited the era's love of fresh air and exercise, when skiing, tennis, and country clubs drew well-heeled crowds to the Alps.
Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of sporting travel and offers a window into a time when a round of golf came with a view of the water and the mountains. Its elegant lines make a prized addition to a study, lounge, or clubhouse.
