Additional Information
Captured on Easter Sunday 1941 by Farm Security Administration photographer Edwin Rosskam, this spirited photograph shows children gathered outside a movie theater in Chicago's Black Belt eagerly awaiting the holiday matinee. The animated crowd captures the excitement of a cherished Easter tradition on the city's South Side.
By 1941 the Black Belt, known today as Bronzeville, boasted a flourishing entertainment district anchored by the legendary Regal Theater and the Savoy Ballroom on South Parkway. Movie matinees were a beloved ritual for neighborhood children, especially on holidays when families dressed in their finest for church and celebration.
Rosskam made this image as part of an extensive FSA assignment alongside Russell Lee, documenting African American life across Chicago's South Side. Their combined work fed into Richard Wright's acclaimed 1941 book 12 Million Black Voices, a collaboration Rosskam had conceived and edited.
This lively photograph stands as a testament to the warmth and communal spirit of a neighborhood that thrived despite entrenched segregation, offering a window into everyday joy on a holiday afternoon. It appeals to collectors of American documentary photography, Chicago heritage, and the invaluable FSA archive.
