Additional Information

Taken in 1916, this group portrait presents the first agents of the Rosenwald Rural Schools program posed before a building at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Robert Russa Moton, who succeeded Booker T. Washington as principal, is seated at center with field agent Clinton Joseph Calloway standing behind him.

Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck and Company, began funding educational facilities for African American communities across the segregated South in 1912 at Washington's urging. Their partnership started with six buildings near the Institute and grew rapidly to encompass hundreds of new structures across Alabama and beyond.

These dedicated men fanned out across the region to oversee construction, raise matching contributions from local families, and coordinate with county boards. Black communities donated cash, lumber, land, and labor to build the facilities they desperately needed, often sacrificing wages they could barely afford to spare.

This reproduction offers a window into a transformative chapter when philanthropy and determination opened the doors of learning for an entire generation. Recognized among the most significant photographs in American educational history, it brings profound meaning to any classroom, office, or library.
