Located in northwestern Puerto Rico, Manatí is part of the San Juan metropolitan area and remains one of the most populous regions of the island. Its history dates back to 1738, when Don Pedro Menéndez Valdés arrived from Spain. Juan Ponce de León had earlier recognized the area for its proximity to the Manatuabón River, and it soon became known for gold panning, which brought early prosperity to the region. Manatí's economy later flourished through sugar cane, pineapple, and plantain farming, which would continue to support Puerto Rico's economic development for generations. The region also played a key role in a growing import and export economy that connected markets across North and Latin America, Western Europe, and Africa.
By the time this photograph was taken in 1941, the city had undergone significant urbanization, with its commercial district emerging as a vibrant hub for residents. Much of Puerto Rico at the time remained primarily agrarian. The island had been ceded to the United States after the conclusion of the Spanish-American War in 1898, officially becoming a U.S. territory.
This photograph captures Manatí during a period of considerable transformation, as World War II unfolded and migration from Puerto Rico to cities like New York began to increase.
