His right hand holds a pair of eagle-feather "snake whips" while his left cradles a bag of ceremonial meal.
Honovi served as one of Curtis' principal informants during his extensive documentation of Hopi culture. The portrait captures the attire worn by Snake dancers on the day of the Antelope dance, a sacred ceremony intended to bring rainfall to the arid mesas of northeastern Arizona.
Curtis published this image as plate 408 in the twelfth volume of The North American Indian, his monumental twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930. Walpi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America, perches atop First Mesa on the Hopi Reservation.
