Additional Information
This military production of Stalingrad shows the region during the bloodiest battle of World War II. The Battle of Stalingrad saw Germany and its allies in close-quarter combat with the Soviet Union and raged for nearly six months as both sides clashed for control of the city. Ultimately the Soviets were victorious, and the battle concluded on February 2, 1943. Their victory was aided by the harsh Russian winter, which led to declining conditions for German troops as the war’s theaters expanded. Stalingrad was one of the most strategically critical Russian cities as it was a central hub on the Volga River and one of the largest industrial centers in the nation.
Control of the city would guarantee the victor access to the vast reserves of oil in the Caucasus region. As German fuel reserves were depleted, they focused their attention on Stalingrad and began their invasion in 1942. Following their surrounding by Soviet forces, the German 6th Army was forced to surrender, which marked the first capitulation of German troops and a turning point for the Allies. The city also held symbolic importance as it was the namesake of the Soviet Leader.
The German defeat and subsequent withdrawal of considerable reserves of troops energized the Soviet Forces, who began a push westward, regaining control of the Eastern theater of the war. This map is an authentic piece of cartographical military history that bears a characteristically minimal style and unique aesthetic that creates a bond between the past and present.
