Additional Information

Captured on March 30, 1943, by the United States Army Signal Corps, this iconic photograph presents Lieutenant General George S. Patton in a half-length portrait facing right, wearing his distinctive leather jacket and steel helmet adorned with three gleaming stars. The image radiates the commanding presence and fierce determination that made Patton one of World War II's most formidable military leaders.

Born in 1885 in San Gabriel, California, to a family with deep military roots, Patton graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1909. He represented the United States in the modern pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, and later joined General John J. Pershing's Punitive Expedition into Mexico in 1916, where he led one of the first motorized combat actions in American military history.

During World War I, Patton established and commanded the American Expeditionary Forces' first tank school in France, pioneering armored warfare doctrine that would define his legacy. By March 1943, when this photograph was taken, he was commanding the II Corps in North Africa, revitalizing demoralized troops after the devastating American defeat at Kasserine Pass and preparing them for the victories that would follow in Sicily and beyond.

This powerful portrait stands as a testament to one of America's most celebrated and controversial military commanders, whose aggressive tactics and larger-than-life personality helped turn the tide of the Second World War. The image offers a compelling window into wartime leadership, making it an extraordinary addition to any collection honoring American military history and the greatest generation.
