One of the most influential singer-songwriters of the twentieth century, Woody Guthrie, remains an iconic figure in the folk genre, and his advocacy for the working class during the early portions of the era became keystones of the musical style which would go on to inspire countless musicians to follow in his spirit, especially during the 1950s and 1960s. Artists like Bob Dylan often cite Guthrie as a critical influence, and his stamp on American music cannot be underestimated. Guthrie wrote hundreds of songs throughout his career, though his collection of compositions from the Dust Bowl era cemented his legacy in American culture.
Guthrie is pictured here with his signature acoustic guitar that bears the phrase "this machine kills fascists," a keystone to his image and one of the most iconic instruments in American musical history. Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and was part of the mass exodus from the country during the Dust Bowl to California, where he witnessed firsthand the treatment of migrant farm laborers, which informed his political views throughout his career, which would not start until his eventual move to New York City where noted archivist Alan Lomax recorded Guthrie.
His most iconic song, "This Land is Your Land," was written in response to his sentiments regarding the popularity of "God Bless America" and remains one of the most recognizable pieces from his canon.
