The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black fighter pilots commissioned by the US Air Force during World War II, with the activation of the 99th Pursuit Squadron in 1941. The first combat deployment of the 99th occurred in 1943 when they shipped out to North Africa to join the 33rd fighter group and its commander, General Officer William Wallace Momyer. Their first mission saw the surrender of nearly twelve thousand Italian soldiers. It was heralded by the press for its success and being the first assault of its nature to achieve such robust results. The 99th then moved on to Sicily and received a Distinguished Unit Citation for its performance in battle.
The all-black 332nd Fighter Group had been deployed with three distinct fighter squadrons, the 100th, 301st, and 302nd. This iconic image shows the pilots receiving kits designed for use in the event that they are shot down over enemy lines. This vintage photograph was taken by noted female American photographer Toni Frissell, a Manhattan-based artist whose career started at Vogue Magazine doing fashion photography. Her photos taken during World War II remain among the most enduring images captured throughout the conflict and document some of the most critical turning points and moments of the war.
Frissell volunteered her services to the American Red Cross in 1941, and her photographs of the Tuskegee Airmen were used to bolster support for the troops back in the United States. This image illustrates the importance and dedication of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II.
