The activation of the 99th Pursuit Squadron in 1941 was the first commission all-black group of fighter pilots in the United States military. Their first deployment was the 99th Squadron joining the 33rd fighter group under the command of General Officer William Wallace Momyer in North Africa. The Squadron conducted an air raid on the small island of Pantalleria dubbed Operation Corkscrew. The mission was to clear sea lanes for naval vessels, which resulted in the surrender of nearly twelve thousand Italian soldiers. The all-black 332nd Fighter Group had been deployed with three distinct fighter squadrons, the 100th, 301st, and 302nd.
Their next mission took them to Sicily, where they would escort large bombers conducting missions in Central Europe, where Axis forces were concentrated. The mission was so successful that the group received a Distinguished Unit Citation. This iconic photo was taken by the prolific and notable female photographer Toni Frissell whose career began in fashion at Vogue Magazine. She volunteered her services with the American Red Cross in 1941 and went to the front lines of the European theater twice during World War II to document the war. Her images were used to bolster support for troops back home.
Frissell heavily documented the Tuskegee Airmen during their service, and this photo shows them discussing their operations from their base in Ramitelli, Italy. The Ramitelli airfield was a single runway that used surrounding farmhouses as operations commands. This iconic photograph shows the brave pilots at a critical point in 1958.
