Additional Information
Taken by the prolific American photographer Toni Frissell, this iconic photograph shows the Tuskegee Airmen during a briefing at their Ramitelli air base in the last year of World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen were critical in assisting air raids on Axis military bases and installments across Central Europe. Their role remains one of the most valuable parts of Allied efforts to stop Axis forces from controlling Central and Eastern Europe. They were first formed in 1941 and deployed the 99th Pursuit Squadron to North Africa to join the 32nd fighter squad under the command of General Officer William Wallace Momyer.
Operation Corkscrew marked their first mission and consisted of an air raid on the small Italian island of Panalleria. The raid was an overwhelming success that resulted in the surrender of nearly twelve thousand Italian soldiers. It earned the Tuskegee Airmen a Distinguished Unit Citation. Frissell's career began as a fashion photographer for Vogue magazine, but she volunteered her services to the American Red Cross in 1941 and traveled to the front line of the European theater twice during World War II to document the war efforts and bolster support in the United States.
During their deployment, the Tuskegee Airmen never lost a bomber they were escorting to enemy fire, and they remain one of the most decorated groups to have served in World War II. Their legacy and service were referenced during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s, and this is an authentic piece of American history.
