Additional Information
Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne at only 25 years old and would serve faithfully until her death in 2022 and became nearly synonymous with the British Crown during her service. With over seven decades as the leading Monarch of the British Crown, Queen Elizabeth II remains one of the most iconic figures of the twentieth century, and this photograph captures her only six years before her coronation in 1953. This photo was taken during her marriage to Philip Mountbatten in 1947 and remains one of the most famous photographs of any Monarch to be taken during the 1900s.
Queen Elizabeth II also became the only Monarch to reach the Platinum Jubilee, a British celebration that marks significant milestones during a Monarch's career in the public eye. Prince Philip was born in Greece into the Greek and Danish royal families, respectively, though the family fled when he was only eighteen months old. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II had both served during World War II, him in the British Royal Navy and her in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, respectively. Queen Elizabeth II's reign as constitutional Monarch saw numerous historical movements during her time, including the decolonization of Africa, the Troubles in Ireland, and Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.
This photograph is an authentic piece of British history. It captures Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II as they begin to embark on what is widely considered the most remarkable reign of any British Monarch in recent history during a transformative period.
