Additional Information

Published around 1950, this colorful halftone poster for the Southern Pacific Railroad captures a diesel locomotive pulling the Shasta Daylight through mountain wilderness as a mother bear and two cubs watch from the trackside - an idyllic scene promoting what the railroad famously called "the million dollar train with the million dollar view."

The Shasta Daylight debuted on July 10, 1949, twelve years after Southern Pacific launched its original Daylight service. The train covered over 700 miles between Portland and San Francisco, traversing the spectacular Cascade Range past Mount Hood, Odell Lake, and Crater Lake. Its nine chair cars were decorated in Oregon-inspired colors - Crater Lake Blue, Summit Green, Canyon Tan, and Cedar Red - with full dining service and the popular Coffee Shop Car.

Southern Pacific was America's largest classic railroad, spanning over 15,000 route miles from northwest Oregon to southeast Louisiana. By mid-century, the company's celebrated Daylight fleet had become a national sensation, and the Shasta quickly proved another hit with travelers drawn to the Pacific Northwest's dramatic scenery. The railroad marketed itself as "the friendly Southern Pacific," emphasizing comfort and scenic grandeur during an era when automobiles and airlines were rapidly transforming American travel.

This reproduction preserves a vivid artifact from the final golden years of American passenger rail, when railroads still competed for travelers with lavish trains and compelling advertising. Prized by collectors of vintage railroad memorabilia, it captures the romance of a beloved service discontinued in 1966.
