Born in New York City to Greek immigrant parents in 1923, Maria Callas would go on to become one of the most renowned opera singers of the twentieth century. Her influence on the world of theater and opera remains profound, with Leonard Bernstein famously calling her "the Bible of Opera." Callas began her musical education at the age of thirteen in Athens, and she is photographed here in 1958, at the height of her illustrious but often turbulent career, which was at times overshadowed by a difficult and highly publicized relationship with her mother.
During World War II, Callas lived with her mother and older sister in Athens, and following the war's end, she expanded her performances internationally. In 1950, she traveled to Mexico with her mother, but the trip led to a final estrangement, and the two never saw each other again. Callas made her public debut in 1938, though in the early stages of her career, her talents went largely unrecognized. By 1942, however, her peers began referring to her as "The God-Given," recognizing her extraordinary ability to master new styles with ease. After the war, instead of relocating to Italy as originally planned, she returned to New York City, a move that ultimately proved fortuitous for her burgeoning career.
