Produced and published by the Nigerian Federal Surveys, this map was produced only two years after the Western African nation gained independence from British Colonial Rule. Modern Nigeria developed under these colonial forces throughout the nineteenth century and bore a distinctive culture marked by traditional norms, beliefs, and traditions that have been influenced by Western culture. Lagos is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with nearly twenty-four million residents. In the 1970s, oil reserves were discovered in Nigeria, which sparked a period of significant economic expansion on a global level as oil exports became the primary economic driver for the nation.
