Additional Information

Ethiopia is home to more than one hundred and fifteen million residents, making it the thirteenth most populous country in the world, and its location in the Horn of Africa makes it the most populated landlocked city on the globe. The region has been proposed as the cradle of the Afroasiatic language, and it bears a rich history that dates back to the earliest recorded data. As far back as 980 BC, the D'mt kingdom exercised control over modern-day Eritrea and Ethiopia; their rival, the kingdom of Aksam, reigned for over nine hundred years until the region embraced Christianity in 330.

This map was produced by the United States Central Intelligence Agency, which keeps updated records to represent shifting geopolitical boundaries and borders as regions undergo regime changes or shifts due to wars or other conflicts. This map was published only six years before the outbreak of the Ethiopian Civil War in 1974, which would go on until 1991. The nation had become unstable under the rule of Emperor Haile Selassie, whose administration was accused of human rights abuses, a failing economy, and a decrease in the quality of life for ordinary citizens while the wealthy residents maintained control and enjoyed the fruits of the status quo.

By 1968, Ethiopia had experienced considerable struggles, including occupation during World War II and other political and economic struggles. This is an authentic piece of international cartographical history that transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond to the past.
