Perhaps one of the most significant photographs in American history, this image of Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon remains an enduring testament to the achievements of NASA and the American space exploration movement of the 1960s. Aldrin was the second American to walk on the moon after the flight commander Neil Armstrong completed the first successful moonwalk. As a Presbyterian elder, Aldrin was the first person to perform a religious ceremony on the moon's surface when he took a private communion. The so-called space race occurred during the 1960s as Russia and America rushed to become the first nations to reach the lunar surface.
Aldrin served in the United States Air Force and was a fighter pilot during the Korean War before returning to the United States and earning a second doctorate of science degree in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Aldrin was selected for NASA's Astronaut Group 3 and became the first member to hold a doctoral degree. Aldrin also earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and retired from the Air Force in 1972 after twenty-one years of service. He authored two memoirs and remains a vigorous voice for space exploration and study.
