Taken by prominent press photographer Thomas J. O'Halloran, this image remains an iconic image of US Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Chisholm was the first black woman to be elected to the US Congress, and she strived to fight for equal rights for black women across the nation after serving in the New York State Assembly following her election in 1968. Chisholm became the first woman to seek the Democratic nomination for President. This photograph was taken during her campaign announcement and remains one of the most enduring images of the 1970s.
O'Halloran's career spanned thirty-five years, and he worked for the US News and World Report, eventually becoming the Chief Photographer. O'Halloran joined the publication in 1951 following his service in the US Air Force setting up aerial photography rigs. His work features some of the most iconic imagery of the tumultuous years of American History, from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s to the Vietnam War and more. O'Halloran's unique style reflects both a documentarian's lens combined with an artist's eye and is among the most important press photography of the twentieth century.
This photograph bears a unique aesthetic and distinctive style that creates a connection for the viewer between the past and present. Chisholm's announcement for her campaign was a turning point in American political history. From 1977 to 1981, Chisholm served as the Secretary of the Democratic Caucus, and her political career would last until her retirement from the US Congress in 1983.
