Additional Information
As a remote military outpost over 700 miles south of Mauritius, the Diego Garcia atoll is the largest island in the Chagos Archipelago chain and home to a mutual UK and US military defense base in the Indian Ocean. This previously uninhabited string of remote islands was settled in the late 1700s by French Maldivians. Following the Napoleonic Wars conclusion, the island came under UK control under conditions laid out in the Treaty of Paris in 1814. The United States Navy began constructing a communication station and airfield in 1971 that was completed in 1973.
This CIA-produced map serves as an official document that top government officials and military leaders would use to develop tactical strategies and maintain up-to-date intelligence from areas worldwide. Produced with a distinctive, minimal style and an immediately recognizable aesthetic, these depictions are genuine pieces of American cartographical history and serve as a window to the past.
The atoll's remote nature made it desirable for these military purposes throughout the twentieth century, and it is one of two critical US bomber bases in the Asia-Pacific region. Diego Garcia is at the southernmost tip of the vast underwater Chagos-Laccadive ridge. Before European discovery, the region survived in Maldivian oral traditions as a refuge for stranded fishermen who would eventually be found and rescued. Due to its remoteness and lack of non-military residents, public awareness of this storied island remains relatively low, setting this depiction apart from other cartographical productions.
