The Korean Peninsula was divided into North and South Korea in 1945 with the Soviets backing the North, while the United States would run a trustee administration South of the 38th Parallel. This agreement was reached following the surrender of Japan after the conclusion of World War II. In 1950, a Soviet-backed attempt to invade South Korea sparked the Korean War, which would lead to nearly three decades of conflict in Southeast Asia, including the French Indo-China War, which would evolve into the Vietnam War. The Korean War ended in 1953 though no formal peace treaty was signed.
This Central Intelligence Agency map bears a signature style that has been employed since they began producing geopolitical maps in 1941. These maps are created to document the most current borders and boundaries and are utilized by political and military leaders to develop and implement policy and strategy. By the 1960s, South Korea had emerged as an economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia, while North Korea has been mired in a dictatorship which is backed by China and Russia. However, it remains a predominantly agricultural state.
1987 was a significant year for South Korea when they elected their first democratically chosen President, Ron Tae-Woo. The election was the result of widespread dissatisfaction that had sparked protests demanding free, fair elections and the expansion of civil liberty.
