Additional Information
Photographed on July 4, 2008, by Carol M. Highsmith as part of her America Project, this vivid color image captures fireworks illuminating the sky above the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Washington Monument and the United States Capitol form a majestic backdrop to the brilliant Independence Day display.
The annual Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall draws hundreds of thousands of spectators to the heart of the nation's capital. The tradition of marking American independence with fireworks dates to 1777, when festivities were held in Philadelphia to honor the first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Highsmith has spent decades documenting the architecture, landscapes, and cultural landmarks of all fifty states, donating her entire photographic archive to the public domain through a historic agreement. Her work preserves an unparalleled visual record of the American experience at the turn of the twenty-first century.
This spectacular photograph stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of America's Independence Day traditions, offering a window into the pageantry that unfolds each summer along the National Mall. It appeals to collectors of patriotic Americana, Washington, D.C., landmark photography, and contemporary celebrations of American heritage.
