Additional Information
Dating to 1572, this map gives all of Africa, from Barbary and Egypt on the Mediterranean in the north down to the far tapering Cape of Good Hope, with the open Atlantic to the west and the Red Sea and Madagascar to the east.
The map comes from Abraham Ortelius of Antwerp, who took the continent from Giacomo Gastaldi's great map of 1564, with its northern parts after the Moorish Leo Africanus. It is part of his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas the world had seen.
Two lakes feed the Nile below the far Mountains of the Moon, and between them sits the land of Prester John, the priest-king of old story. Out at sea swim a swordfish and a whale, while a naval battle rages away off the coast.
This map stands as a testament to Africa as the old world knew it, offering a window into a continent that Europe had only just entered. One of the most mysterious of all old maps of Africa, it lends a torrid, sun-struck lure to any living room, office, or study.
