Additional Information
Dating to 1572, this map sets out the New World, the linked continents of North and South America much as Europe was first coming to know them. Down the long western edge, South America still carries its old bulging coast.
The map is the work of Abraham Ortelius of Antwerp. It comes from his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the Theatre of the World, put forth in 1570 and widely held to be the first modern atlas, a single ordered run of uniform maps.
North America lies across the top, its coasts and rivers still half guesswork, while South America runs down the lower half. Galleons and a great sea beast cross the Pacific to the west, and at the foot the Strait of Magellan divides the land from the austral south.
This map stands as a testament to the great age when Europe first crossed the ocean to a New World, offering a window into lands still mostly uncharted. One of the finest early maps of the Americas, it lends a far-flung, ocean-going glamour to any living room, office, or study.
