Dating to 1572, this map shows all Europe as the sixteenth century saw it, from Spain and the British Isles in the west to Russia in the east, and from the cold Baltic in the north down to the Mediterranean in the south.
The map is by Abraham Ortelius of Antwerp, working from the best maps of his day, above all the 1554 map of Europe by his friend Gerard Mercator. It is one sheet of his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the great atlas of 1570, the first of its kind.
In one corner, set on a plinth, Europa sits astride the bull, the maiden whose name the continent bears. Out on the Atlantic a ship plies west, while away in the east the tents of the Tartars stand upon the open Russian steppe.
This map stands as a testament to Europe at the start of the age of map-making, offering a window into the Continent as that age first saw itself. One of the most gracious old maps of Europe, it lends an august, old-world splendour to any living room, office, or study.
