Additional Information
Dating to 1572, this bird's-eye plan looks down on Paris, given here its Latin name Lutetia, the largest city of Gaul. The Seine threads through the center, wrapping the island where the city began, while streets and church towers crowd the walled banks.
The plan appeared in the famous town atlas of Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, the great companion to Ortelius's world atlas. It follows the lost grand plan of the city made around 1530, carrying a Latin cartouche in one corner and a French one opposite, each lettered with care.
The settlement first rose among the Gaulish Parisii on an island in the river, a site commanding the water trade and the roads that crossed it. This view holds the compact, gated city of the Renaissance, its quarters ringed by medieval walls long before the boulevards of later ages.
This map stands as a testament to a capital already ancient yet forever renewing itself, offering a window into Paris four and a half centuries ago. Among the most iconic city views ever produced, it lends romantic, timeworn charm to any living room, office, or study.
