Additional Information

Dating to around 1615, this bird's-eye view looks east over Paris under Louis XIII. Packed houses and church towers huddle along the Seine, which loops through the city with the Île de la Cité at its centre and the old walls drawn around it all.

Matthäus Merian of Basel made this view, later put out again by the Paris publisher Melchior Tavernier. A verse hails Paris as another world, a place of powerful people where all things abound, and it remains one of the great early images of the city.

The three districts of old Paris fill it: the Ville on the right bank, the Cité on the island, and the Université on the left. Old walls enclose them, with the faubourgs beyond, and bridges tie the banks across the river.

This map stands as a testament to Paris at the start of the Bourbon age, offering a window into the tight old city of close streets and gardens. One of the most beguiling old views of Paris, it lends a courtly, Parisian grace to any living room, office, or study.
