Additional Information
Dating to around 1700, this bird's-eye view overlooks Brest from out on its open rade. The town huddles along the slopes by the Penfeld, Recouvrance on the far bank, while a flotilla of warships rides at its moorings in the roadstead.
The view comes from the Paris studio of the Avelines. Brest was the Atlantic war port of Louis XIV's fleet, its yard first set out under Richelieu and Colbert and its walls later girded by Vauban, a great sea port on the Ocean.
Set at the river mouth is the old château, while along the Penfeld lie the wharves and slipways of the royal arsenal, where the king's ships were rigged and readied for sea. Recouvrance climbs the far bank, and westward the channel runs out to the Atlantic.
This map stands as a testament to Brest, the spearhead of the French navy, offering a window into a fighting harbour in the great age of oak and canvas. One of the most rousing old sea-port views, it lends a salty, briny pride to any living room, office, or study.
