Produced at a pivotal moment in North American history, this map was created in 1851 for John Tallis' Illustrated Atlas and illustrates how geo-political boundaries have evolved and changed as the United States and Mexico formed a border over the following decades, which would shape the region economically, politically, and culturally to this day. This depiction shows Texas only six years after being annexed into the United States in 1845. It would become one of the most iconic states in the Union with a culture that blends Eastern European, Mexican, and United States heritages and traditions into a distinct society, especially among the different regions, which are the largest in the lower forty-eight states.
This map was also illustrated at the height of the Gold Rush in California, where the state experienced a significant transformation as many eager prospectors flooded to California in search of enormous reserves of gold recently discovered. The Gold Rush would allow small towns to be established with local economies based on outfitting prospectors,, enabling the state to grow its population and develop into one of the most prosperous in the nation.
