Additional Information

Published in 1854 by E. Sachse and Company of Baltimore, this bird's-eye view presents Ellicotts Mills nestled along the steep banks of the Patapsco River in Howard County, Maryland. Vignettes of prominent buildings and factories surround the central image, showcasing the enterprises that sustained this thriving settlement.

Founded in 1772 by three Quaker brothers from Pennsylvania, the Ellicott family built flour mills that transformed regional agriculture and helped establish Baltimore as a major grain port. The town gained lasting fame in 1830 when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reached its depot, marking the first terminus of any commercial rail line in America.

Sachse's firm produced views that businessmen like John Schofield commissioned to promote civic pride and attract investment. The surrounding vignettes gave individual merchants and mill owners permanent recognition alongside the broader panorama of their hometown.

This reproduction provides insight into an industrious antebellum community where waterpower, railroads, and entrepreneurial ambition converged along a single river valley. Considered among the finest town views of the era, it brings regional heritage to any office, study, or living room.
