Additional Information

Drawn by Lewis Bradley and published in 1855 by Smith Brothers and Company, this panoramic view presents the city of Oswego where its namesake river empties into Lake Ontario. Steamboats and sailing vessels crowd the busy waterfront while the settlement spreads along both banks of the divided channel.

Oswego thrived as one of the most important harbors on the Great Lakes, handling grain, lumber, and goods flowing between the interior and the Atlantic coast. The Oswego Canal, completed in 1828, linked the docks to the Erie system, creating a corridor from the heartland to New York.

Founded as a British trading post and fortified during the French and Indian War, Fort Ontario guarded the entrance for over a century. By the 1850s, the military presence had given way to booming enterprise as flour mills, starch factories, and shipyards crowded the shoreline.

This reproduction provides insight into a lakefront community at the peak of its commercial importance before railroads shifted trade away from the old canal routes. Considered among the finest port views of the era, it brings maritime heritage to any office, study, or living room.
