Additional Information

Issued around 1856 by Currier and Ives of New York, this peaceful color print portrays the holy well of Saint Fineen at Gougane Barra, a pilgrimage site in the mountains of County Cork. The artwork shows the oratory rising from an island in the lake, honoring the founder of Cork.

Saint Finbarr, sometimes called Fineen, is remembered as the sixth-century hermit who chose this remote glen for prayer and contemplation. Legend holds that he built his monastic cell on the island before traveling downstream to establish Cork along the River Lee. The valley has remained a place of quiet devotion.

Pilgrims have journeyed to such sites across Ireland since ancient days, first in pre-Christian veneration and later within the Christian calendar of saints' feasts and patron days. Gougane Barra became one of the beloved destinations for Irish families observing traditional pilgrimage rounds, and its dramatic setting attracted nineteenth-century landscape artists.

This lyrical print stands as a testament to the spiritual heritage of County Cork and its place in Irish cultural memory, offering a window into the pilgrimage traditions that shaped generations in the Old World. It appeals to collectors of Irish heritage imagery, sacred landscapes, and Currier and Ives prints.
