Additional Information

Published around 1856 by Currier and Ives of New York, this peaceful landscape depicts a Native American village settled in a grassy meadow beside a broad bend of the upper Mississippi River. Teepees dot the riverbank where figures gather and a lone canoe glides quietly toward the shore.

The upper Mississippi wound through lands long inhabited by the Dakota, Ojibwe, and other Indigenous nations before treaties and westward settlement reshaped the region during the 1830s and 1840s. By mid-century, steamboat traffic, fur trading posts, and newly platted towns had dramatically altered the river corridor.

Currier and Ives issued several views of the Mississippi and its tributaries, satisfying Eastern curiosity about the vast interior of the continent. Such prints introduced parlor audiences to landscapes few would ever visit, bringing romanticized visions of river life into homes thousands of miles from the western wilderness.

This reproduction offers a window into a vanished chapter when Indigenous communities flourished along the great river's wooded bluffs and fertile bottomlands. Considered among the finest American river views of the era, it brings quiet dignity and historical depth to any study or gallery wall.
