Additional Information
Created in 1857 by Utagawa Hiroshige, this iconic composition presents enormous paper carp streamers billowing from bamboo poles above the Surugadai district of Edo during the Tango no Sekku celebration. The colorful banners dominate the sky while Suido Bridge and the rooftops of the capital stretch below.
Known today as Children's Day, the ancient holiday honored the health and future success of young boys in each household. Families raised koinobori outside their homes, choosing the carp as a symbol of courage and perseverance for its legendary strength in swimming upstream against powerful currents.
The print belongs to Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," a series of 119 compositions depicting the seasons and daily rhythms of the shogun's city. Published between 1856 and 1858, the collection profoundly influenced Western artists including Vincent van Gogh.
This reproduction offers a window into the vibrant spirit of old Japan, where annual customs filled the skies with color and meaning. Considered among the most recognized Japanese prints in the world, it brings cultural beauty to any living room, study, or gallery wall.
