Additional Information

Photographed just one year before the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, this image of two enslaved African American boys in the South remains one of the oldest and most enduring photographs of pre-emancipation America. It offers a powerful glimpse into the era and highlights the profound cultural and societal transformation the country would undergo in the following decade, culminating in the Union's victory over the Confederate Army in 1865. After Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860, his pro-emancipation stance prompted several Southern states to secede from the Union, leading to the seizure of forts and federal assets and ultimately sparking the Civil War.

Taken by noted photographer John B. Heywood in New Berne, North Carolina, this photo was widely circulated in the years that followed as the anti-slavery movement gained momentum throughout the Northern states. Although the Confederacy was never recognized as a sovereign nation by any foreign government, it raised funds and mounted major attacks during key battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the initial assault on Fort Sumter, which marked the formal start of the war.

This photograph bears a distinctive aesthetic and historical resonance, transporting the viewer back in time and creating an indelible connection between past and present. It stands as an authentic piece of American photographic history, capturing the stark reality of slavery and the evolution of American society.
