Additional Information
Located on the northeastern coast of Florida near the Georgia border, St. Augustine, Florida, was founded by Spanish explorers in 1565 and is the oldest continually inhabited city in the contiguous United States. It has a rich history and distinct culture. It has been influenced by numerous periods of occupation and governance by a wide variety of European cultures as the nation evolved and developed throughout its colonial periods through independence and into the age of modernity. St. Augustine served as the capital of Spanish Florida for two hundred years and bears some of the most revered historical architecture of the era, which attracts visitors to numerous sites, including the Castillo de San Marcos, a seventeenth-century fort that remains intact to this day.
In 1861, as the nation was embroiled in the early years of the American Civil War, St. Augustine was undergoing a period of significant transformation. The war, which would continue until 1865 with a Union victory over the Confederacy, was a pivotal moment in the city's history. However, the following decades saw St. Augustine rise from the ashes, developing a new period of prosperity and growth. The city's thriving port and the industrial revolution spurred economic development across the United States, marking a new chapter in its history.
This photograph has a distinctive aesthetic and style that transports the viewer back in time, immediately creating a link to the past. It represents the evolution, growth, and creation of the culture St. Augustine maintains today and is an authentic piece of history.
