Additional Information
Issued by Currier and Ives in 1862 after a painting by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, this dusk scene shows three buckskin-clad hunters crouched behind a fallen log with rifles raised, as Native warriors approach decoy figures the hunters have arranged near a campfire within a shadowy forest clearing.
The image appeared during the opening year of the Civil War, when Eastern audiences remained fascinated by wilderness adventure tales drawn from the trans-Mississippi West. Dime novels, illustrated periodicals, and sporting journals fed public appetite for tense encounters between frontiersmen and Indigenous peoples of the Plains.
Born near Manchester, England, in 1819, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait emigrated to New York in 1850 and soon began supplying Currier and Ives with sporting and wildlife compositions. His detailed canvases of outdoor scenes became among the firm's most sought-after subjects throughout the 1860s.
This reproduction bears witness to a mythologized era when the American frontier loomed large in the national imagination, shaping literature, art, and identity for generations. Treasured among the most collectible western prints ever issued, it brings frontier character to any study, cabin, or lodge.
