One of the most influential and impactful American presidents in the history of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, is portrayed here in 1865, the same year as the conclusion of the American Civil War, which broke out during his presidency and remained one of the most critical turning points in the nation as the Union and Confederate forces battled for years until Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House. Lincoln's legacy is celebrated in the United States, with his birthday being commemorated as President's Day in numerous states, including his birth state of Kentucky and Illinois, where he was raised.
This photograph was also taken in the same year as Lincoln's assassination by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater, a moment that would shock and transform American history once again. Lincoln, born into poverty in a log cabin, was self-educated, eventually becoming a lawyer before embarking on his political career. Lincoln famously debated Stephen Douglas in 1858 after re-entering politics following the Kansas-Nebraska Act which would allow slavery within the territories and he would run for President in 1860 with a sweeping win, though his win divided the nation, and caused many Southern states to began to secede from the nation which would lead to the American Civil War.
