Additional Information
Drawn by Eugène Cicéri and Philippe Benoist and published in 1867 by Goupil and Company, this official bird's-eye view presents the Exposition Universelle grounds spread across the Champ de Mars in Paris. The vast oval exhibition palace dominates the center while gardens, pavilions, and the city skyline extend beyond.
Emperor Napoleon III organized the fair to showcase French industrial and cultural supremacy before an international audience of over fifteen million visitors. Fifty-two nations participated, displaying machinery, fine art, furniture, and foodstuffs beneath the enormous iron and glass structure designed by engineer Jean-Baptiste Krantz.
The exposition introduced countless innovations to the public, including hydraulic elevators, reinforced concrete, and an aquarium. Distinguished visitors ranged from Tsar Alexander II and the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire to the young Japanese delegation making one of its earliest diplomatic appearances on the world stage.
This reproduction offers a window into the golden age of grand expositions when host countries competed to dazzle visitors with architectural ambition and technological progress. Considered among the finest views of Second Empire Paris, it brings European grandeur to any office, study, or living room.
