Located on the banks of the Cedar River, Cedar Rapids and Kingston remain one of the cultural and economic hubs for Eastern Iowa and were experiencing a period of significant growth in the years after the end of the American Civil War as residents flocked to the region eager for agricultural work in the farms surrounding the city and manufacturing jobs spurred by a growing industrial economy in the city's center. Produced by Albert Ruger, this bird's eye perspective features a unique style that would become one of the most popular pieces of marketing materials for towns and cities across the United States during the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Ruger was an early pioneer of the form, which would go on to inspire numerous other lithography houses to produce similar works. His signature aesthetic and bold palette distinguished his pieces from others and brought the subject to life with artistic flourished to entice residents and merchants alike. Ruger's work focused on towns and cities in the American Midwest, which were growing rapidly as access expanded due to the completion of numerous railroads during the 1800s, and these depictions would be advertised in stations across the nation.
