Additional Information
Originally settled by French colonial fur traders, Grand Haven came under American control following the War of 1812, with a permanent trading post established in 1821. The town was officially named Grand Haven in 1835. By the time this panoramic map was produced, the city was experiencing significant growth and transformation, thriving as a center for lumber milling, logging, and shipbuilding, while its fur processing industry, established during its early years, remained robust. Following the American Civil War, which had ended just three years prior, the region saw a population boom, as Southern Americans moved north in search of new opportunities in the expanding industrial centers of the North.
Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Grand River, Grand Haven's strategic location fueled its economic expansion throughout the 19th century. This stunning bird's-eye perspective captures the town during a pivotal period of growth. Bird's-eye maps, widely popular in the 19th century, were often used to promote cities by showcasing notable civic features to attract new residents. This particular map was created by Albert Ruger and Eli Sheldon Glover, two pioneers of the form based in Chicago, who produced numerous panoramic maps that helped document America's evolving urban landscapes.
With its distinct style and unique aesthetic, this bird's-eye perspective transports the viewer back in time, offering a historical snapshot of Grand Haven's transformation and economic rise in the late 19th century.
