Produced and published during a period of significant growth and prosperity following the conclusion of the American Civil War, this bird's eye perspective of Danville, Illinois, bears a unique aesthetic and distinctive style that immediately transports the viewer back in time. Danville attracted eager immigrants from Western Europe and the American South looking for jobs in the thriving coal mines. Manufacturing had become a significant source of income in the latter portion of the eighteenth century. Danville's location in central Illinois made it a hub for travelers from Chicago, and bird's eye perspectives were used as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike by featuring prominent economic opportunities and civic features as well as natural attractions.
This map was illustrated by noted American cartographer and lithographer Albert Ruger, who was an early pioneer of the form. His work helped popularize bird's eye perspectives, and their distinct visuals remained widely popular throughout his lifetime until advances in aviation and photography allowed for aerial photography. Panoramic maps are not used for navigation and contain numerous artistic flourishes not commonly found in other pieces of cartographical work. Ruger's signature style was used to produce numerous depictions of towns and cities across the Midwest, and his offices were based in Chicago.
This is a piece of American cartographical history that captures a moment in the rich past of central Illinois. As the country began reconstruction after the Civil War, the Midwest experienced a boom in population and was entering a prosperous time.
