Produced and published by an early pioneer of the form, Albert Ruger, this bird's eye perspective captures Dayton, Ohio, in a period of significant growth and transformation only five years after the conclusion of the American Civil War as residents flocked to towns and cities across the Midwest eager for economic opportunities in emerging industries spurred on by demand in lumber, steel, and other milled goods in major markets across the nation. Ruger's work bears a distinctive style and unique aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a bond between the past and present that illustrates a region's growth and development.
Dayton was formed in 1796 when a group of twelve settlers traveled from Cincinnati via the Great Miami River. Ohio achieved statehood in 1803, and Dayton was officially incorporated in 1805, receiving a charter as a city in 1841. When construction of the Dayton-Cincinnati canal began in 1827, the town was opened for further expansion by immigrants from across Western Europe and England who established neighborhoods and communities based on shared cultures, many of which exist to this day. By 1870 Dayton had become a regional hub for manufacturing and was the home of many unique innovations and patents that would earn it a reputation as a leader in technology for the nation.
