Additional Information

Published in 1873 by George Degen of New York, this sweeping bird's-eye view presents Saint Louis, Missouri, as seen from above the Mississippi River looking west. Steamboats and barges crowd the levee while the dense urban grid stretches inland from the busy waterfront toward the open prairie beyond.

By the early 1870s, Saint Louis ranked among the largest cities in the nation, serving as the principal corridor between the settled East and the expanding frontier. The Eads Bridge, then under construction, would open in 1874 as the first major steel crossing of the great river.

The city owed its explosive growth to its commanding position at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, where commerce from thirty states converged. Railroads, grain elevators, breweries, and stockyards fueled a booming economy that had quadrupled the population in just two decades following the Civil War.

This reproduction offers a window into a moment when the great river hub stood at the peak of its commercial prosperity and ambition stretched toward the horizon. Considered among the finest panoramic views of the era, it brings civic grandeur to any office, study, or living room.
